Alpauris ‘scare chair’

Chairlift Huez, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France

What to expect

The Alpauris 'scare chair' is a high-speed detachable quad chairlift located in Alpe d'Huez, France. It's known for its unique route, which takes skiers through a tunnel under an active airport runway, down a steep ravine, and back up the other side. The chairlift accesses the ski area in Auris-en-Oisans, offering a variety of green, blue, and red runs, as well as a few black runs. The slopes in Auris are generally quieter than in Alpe d'Huez, with shorter lift queues. There are also a few restaurants in the area, including the 'Foret de Maronne' restaurant, which has a lovely south-facing terrace. Despite its intimidating nickname, the 'scare chair' is a great way to experience the skiing in Alpe d'Huez and explore the surrounding area

Activities: We took the Alpauris ‘scare chair’ which descends steeply into the Sarenne gorge and takes you through a tunnel under the runway of the tiny Altiport

Highlights: The kids loved the ride on the chairlift, especially the tunnel experience. We enjoyed the scenic views of the Sarenne gorge and the Altiport ✨
