Montferrand is a medieval district located in Clermont-Ferrand, France. It was founded in the 12th century by the Counts of Auvergne and still retains its medieval character, with roads built in a regular grid pattern inspired by the fortified towns of South-Western France. The town was united with Clermont in 1630 by the edict of Troyes and features extraordinary urban dwellings dating from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Montferrand was one of the first protected areas in France
