Sauna Tampere, West and Inner Finland, Finland

What to expect

Tampere, the Sauna Capital of the World, is a great destination for families to experience authentic Finnish sauna culture. The city has the largest number of public saunas in Finland, with many of them offering a unique experience, such as the Rajaportti sauna, the oldest still operating public sauna in Finland, and the Rauhaniemi and Kaupinoja saunas, which offer the possibility to swim in the lake. Families can also enjoy the Suomensaari sauna, known for its feisty heat and friendly service, or the Sauna Restaurant Kuuma, where they can enjoy a sauna and good food. For a more adventurous experience, families can visit the Viikinsaari island, which offers public sauna sessions and a charming beach. Tampere also offers other family-friendly activities, such as the Särkänniemi amusement park, the Flowpark Varala nature-based adventure park, and several themed playgrounds

This family's experience:

Activities: There’s one sauna to every three people in Finland, and a favourite Finnish pastime is getting properly hot then dashing off for a dip in a frozen lake. My 7-year-old daughter loved the sauna but took one look at the ice-hole and decided to lie down on the bank and make snow angels instead, while Mummy braved the black water in the dark

Highlights: My daughter loved the sauna and we both enjoyed the exhilarating experience of braving the black water in the dark. It’s the sort of outdoors you just don’t get in Britain ✨
