Luxor Temple

Temple Luxor, Luxor, Egypt

What to expect

The Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city of Luxor. It was constructed approximately 1400 BCE and is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship. The temple is not dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the pharaoh in death, but rather to the concept of kingship. It may have been where many of the pharaohs of Egypt were crowned in reality or conceptually. The temple was built with sandstone from the Gebel el-Silsila area and features a unique layout, with a large peristyle court and a complex of halls and chambers beyond. The temple has undergone several additions and restorations over the years, including the construction of a peristyle courtyard and a massive pylon by Ramesses II. The temple is also home to a number of notable features, including a granite shrine of Alexander the Great and a series of scenes depicting the Opet Festival
