Pyramids of Giza

Archaeological site El Haram, Giza, Egypt

What to expect

The Pyramids of Giza are a complex of ancient monuments located in Giza, Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for pharaoh Khufu, is the largest and oldest of the three pyramids, and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. The pyramid was built over a period of about 26 years and was the world's tallest human-made structure for more than 3,800 years. The pyramid complex also includes the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure, as well as several smaller pyramids, temples, and tombs. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur'. The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs and their families, and were believed to provide a means for the deceased to ascend to the afterlife. The Great Pyramid is an impressive structure, with an original height of 146.6 meters and a base perimeter of 1,005 meters. The pyramid's internal temperature remains a constant 20 degrees Celsius, and its base is a near-perfect square. The pyramids are a testament to the advanced engineering and architectural skills of the ancient Egyptians, and continue to be an important cultural and historical site
