The Al-Hussein Mosque is a significant Islamic site in Cairo, Egypt, considered one of the holiest in the country. It is a mosque and mausoleum of Husayn ibn Ali, originally built in 1154 and later reconstructed in 1874. The mosque is located near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar and the famous Al Azhar Mosque. It features a mix of architectural styles, including a minaret with carved arabesque panels in stucco added by the Ayyubids in 1237. The shrine is a major pilgrimage center, and visitors can see the wooden cenotaph of Al-Husayn, a magnificent specimen of twelfth-century wood carving. The mosque is also a center for congregational prayers, and on Fridays, the sidewalks and maydan are covered with mats and rugs to accommodate the overflowing congregation
