Middelaldercentret

Open-air museum Nykøbing F, Zealand, Denmark

What to expect

Middelaldercentret, also known as The Medieval Centre, is an experimental living history archaeological open-air museum that depicts the Middle Ages in Denmark during the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The museum features a reconstructed town with craftsmen, a harbour with ships and boats, and a market place. Employees are dressed in period costumes and live and work in the houses, doing everyday activities such as craftsmanship, cooking, and weapon training. The museum also has a variety of siege weapons, including trebuchets, a ballista, and a cannon, as well as smaller weapons like handguns, longbows, and crossbows. Visitors can experience live firing of the weapons, archery, knightly tournaments, and demonstrations of crafts and tasks from the late 14th century and early 15th centuries. The museum offers a unique and immersive experience, with a focus on authenticity and historical accuracy. Families can enjoy a range of activities, including a new game called 'Handel og Held' where children and adults can try their hand at being medieval merchants, and see if they can accumulate wealth and avoid debt

Lolland with children: Destinations for family holidays
This family's experience:

Activities: We explored the medieval open-air museum, which includes a replica of a typical Danish village from the late Middle Ages. We participated in activities such as archery and knight fights and watched demonstrations of jousting and catapults. We also walked through the Inventor and Myth paths

Highlights: The mix of museum and activity center was a personal favorite. The children got to try archery and knight fights. At certain times, mounted heroes show jousting with the lance and the catapults hurl heavy stones far into the sea ✨
