Hans Christian Andersen's Birth Home

Museum Odense C, Southern Denmark Region, Denmark

What to expect

Hans Christian Andersen's Birth Home is a historic house museum dedicated to the famous author Hans Christian Andersen. The museum is located in the old town of Odense, Denmark, and showcases the life and works of Andersen. The birthplace, also known as H.C. Andersen's House, is a small yellow house where Andersen was born and lived with his parents. The museum documents his life from his childhood years to his schooling, career as an author, and later life, with artifacts providing an insight into his acquaintances and adventures. The childhood home, located at 3-5 Munkemøllestræde, is another part of the museum, which contains an exhibition of the cobbling tools used by Andersen's father and other items based on Andersen's own descriptions. A new installation called House of Fairytales is planned to open, which will follow an immersive theatre concept that taps into the fundamental aspect of fairytales

This family's experience:

Activities: We visited Hans Christian Andersen's Birth Home. The children, being big fans of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales, were very excited to visit. "The house shows a small exhibition about how the famous author grew up back then."

Highlights: It was especially exciting for our older son, Nunu, to see how Hans Christian Andersen lived in the past. The visit was included in our museum card ✨
