The Sand-Covered Church

Church Skagen, North Denmark Region, Denmark

What to expect

The Sand-Covered Church, also known as the Buried Church, is a historic church in Skagen, Denmark. It was built in the 14th century and features a unique crow-stepped gable tower. The church was partially buried by sand from nearby dunes in the 18th century, and despite efforts to keep it free of sand, it was eventually abandoned and demolished in 1795. Today, only the tower remains, with approximately 18 meters visible above the sand. The site is owned by the National Museum of Denmark and is a notable example of the effects of desertification in the region. Visitors can see the remaining tower and imagine the church's former grandeur
