What to expect

The Tibetan Plateau, also known as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is a vast elevated plateau located in southwestern China. It is the world's highest and largest plateau above sea level, with an average elevation exceeding 4,500 meters. The plateau is surrounded by imposing mountain ranges, including the Himalayas and the Kunlun Mountains, and is home to many lakes, rivers, and glaciers. The region is often referred to as the 'Roof of the World' and is a unique and fascinating destination for visitors. The plateau is dotted with many brackish lakes, and its southern section contains the headwaters of the upper Indus and Brahmaputra rivers. Grasslands are used for pasturage, and barley is grown on the plateau, while forests grow on the slopes of valleys, particularly in the south
