What to expect

The Peterborough Lift Lock is a boat lift located on the Trent Canal in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. It is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world, raising boats 19.8 meters. The lock operates on a balance system, whereby water is let into the upper chamber, a connecting valve is opened and the heavier chamber automatically descends, forcing up the lower chamber to start a new cycle. The lift lock is a National Historic Site of Canada and an Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Visitors can learn about the lock's history and operation at the nearby visitor centre, which offers interactive simulations and exhibits. The lock is also a popular spot for skating in the winter

Highlights: We were amazed by the Peterborough Lift Lock, built in 1904. It compensates for a difference in elevation of 19.8 meters and was the largest structure of its kind ever built at the time ✨
