Grassi Lakes Trail

Hiking trail Alberta, Alberta, Canada

What to expect

Grassi Lakes are two shallow, aquamarine lakes located in the southern Canadian Rockies, overlooking the town of Canmore, Alberta. The lakes are a popular destination for hikers and rock climbers, with trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and waterfalls. The cliffs are part of the Cairn Formation, a fossil reef that formed during the Late Devonian period, and feature unique rock formations and pockets that are used by climbers as hand- and foot-holds. The area is also home to ancient rock paintings that are over 1,000 years old, believed to have been created by Kutenai ancestors. Visitors can access the lakes via two trails: the easier Grassi Lake Upper trail, which follows an old road through dense forest, or the more challenging Grassi Lake Interpretive trail, which climbs gradually through forested terrain and offers excellent views of the waterfall and the town of Canmore
