The Columbia Icefield is the largest ice field in the Canadian Rockies, covering an area of approximately 230 square kilometers. It is located on a high alpine plateau, draped over the Continental Divide, and is about 28 kilometers long. The icefield receives around 7 meters of snowfall each year, adding to its thickness of about 365 meters. The Athabasca Glacier, situated across from the Icefield Centre, is the most-visited glacier in North America and offers insights into glacier formation. Visitors can learn about the icefield's history, which dates back to the Great Glaciation period, and its significance in the context of climate change. The area is also home to several mountain peaks, including Mount Columbia and Mount Bryce, which offer breathtaking views and opportunities for exploration. However, visitors are cautioned not to cross the barriers, as the glacier can be dangerous due to deep, hidden cracks called crevasses
