The Athabasca Glacier is a glacier located in the Canadian Rockies, and it is one of the six principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield. It is approximately 6 km long, covers an area of 6 km2, and is measured to be between 90–300 metres thick. The glacier has been receding or melting for the last 125 years due to a warming climate, and it has left a moonscape of rocky moraines in its wake. Visitors can see the glacier from the Icefields Parkway, and guided tours are available to walk on the glacier. However, caution is advised as the glacier is dangerous, with deep, hidden cracks called crevasses. For safety, visitors should not cross the barriers, as people have been killed falling into these crevasses
