Tonlé Sap

Lake Cambodia

What to expect

Tonlé Sap is a natural floodplain reservoir located in central Cambodia. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world. The lake is fed by numerous erratic tributaries and also by the Srêng and Sên rivers. During the monsoonal regime, the swollen Mekong reverses the flow of the Sab River, increasing the lake's area and depth, and permitting vessels to navigate it. The lake supports a large carp-breeding and carp-harvesting industry, with numerous floating fishing villages inhabited largely by ethnic Vietnamese. The fermented and salted fish are staples of the Cambodian diet. The lake is also home to a variety of species, including birds, fish, and other animals, making it a unique and fascinating place to visit

CAMBODIA with family, Cambodia with children
This family's experience:

Activities: We spent a day on a boat from Battambang to Siem Reap, going through Tonlé Sap. We had lunch in a floating canteen. "Le Tonlé Sap est un lac gigantesque au coeur du Cambodge, avec des marchés flottants et des petits villages lacustres" (The Tonlé Sap is a gigantic lake in the heart of Cambodia, with floating markets and small lakeside villages)

Highlights: We all really enjoyed this day. The children especially liked the change of scenery. The floating villages and markets were a unique experience. The boat journey itself was an adventure ✨
