What to expect

The S-21 Genocide Museum, also known as Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, is a museum chronicling the Cambodian genocide. Located in Phnom Penh, the site is a former secondary school which was used as Security Prison 21 by the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 until its fall in 1979. The museum preserves a tragic period in history with the aim to encourage visitors to be messengers of peace. It is estimated that 20,000 people were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, and the prison held between 1,000 and 1,500 prisoners at any one time. The museum showcases the crimes of the Khmer Rouge regime, including torture and mass execution, and serves as a memorial site for the victims of the genocide
