What to expect

The Tsari Mali Grad Fortress is a historical site located near the village of Belchin, in the region of Samokov, Bulgaria. The fortress holds significant importance due to its strategic location, which allowed it to monitor the valley and protect its western part. Archaeological studies indicate that the construction of the fortress began during the reign of Emperor Valens (364-378 AD). The site comprises several components, including the medieval church 'St. Petka', an ethnographic complex in the village of Belchin, and the ancient Tsari Mali Grad Fortress. Excavations have uncovered numerous findings, such as coins, jewelry, arrows, and parts of weapons, as well as architectural remains. The fortress is believed to have been an important early Christian center, with a Christian religious complex found near the gate of the fortress. The site has undergone restoration and now offers access to visitors, with guided tours available in Bulgarian and English
