Hrelyo Tower

Tower Rila, Kyustendil, Bulgaria

What to expect

The Hrelyo Tower is a 23.60-meter-high stone tower located in the Rila Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Bulgaria. It was built in 1335 by protosevast Stefan Hrelio Dragovol and serves as a watchtower and a chapel. The tower has five floors, with a chapel devoted to the Transfiguration of Christ on the top floor, featuring fragments of 14th-century frescoes. The tower is a great site to visit, especially for those interested in history and architecture. It is also a significant part of the Rila Monastery, which was rebuilt by Hrelyo Dragovol in 1334 and became an important architectural complex

This family's experience:

Activities: We climbed Hrelyo Tower, a medieval tower at the Rila Monastery, and enjoyed the panoramic view from the top. My son was especially captivated by the 'Bulgarian knight' armor on display

Highlights: My son loved the medieval tower, imagining himself as a knight. We had fun climbing the stairs and playing hide-and-seek on the top floor ✨
