The Gruta do Lago Azul Natural Monument, located in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, is a natural wonder featuring two caves with unique calcareous formations and a subterranean lake that takes on an intense blue color between September and February. The main hall of the Gruta do Lago Azul has a sloping floor that leads to the lake, which is over 50 meters long. The cave also contains fossil bones of large mammals, including giant sloths, armadillos, and sabre-toothed tigers, that inhabited the region over 12,000 years ago. The Gruta de Nossa Senhora Aparecida, another cave in the monument, has a large hall with speleothems and is closed to visitors for safety reasons. The monument is a protected area, and visitors can explore the Gruta do Lago Azul with guided tours, allowing for a low-impact and safe experience.
