Uyuni Salt Flats

Salt flat Uyuni (Thola Pampa), Potosí, Bolivia

What to expect

The Salar de Uyuni, also known as the world's largest salt flat, is a breathtaking natural wonder located in southwestern Bolivia. With an area of approximately 10,582 square kilometers, it was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes that existed around forty thousand years ago. The Salar is covered by a few meters of salt crust, which has an extraordinary flatness, and serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine rich in lithium. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar ideal for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. Following rain, a thin layer of dead calm water transforms the flat into the world's largest mirror. The Salar is also a prime breeding ground for several species of flamingos and has been used as a filming location for several movies. Visitors can explore the Salar's unique landscape and enjoy the stunning scenery, making it a great destination for families to experience the natural beauty of Bolivia
