Vilsalpsee

Lake Tannheim, Tyrol, Austria

What to expect

Vilsalpsee is a beautiful lake situated in the Vilsalpsee Mountains, part of the Allgäu Alps. The lake is a gem in the midst of a natural reserve, characterized by its richness in species, with some 700 different plants and rare animals such as Alpine Salamanders and European Toads. The Vilsalpsee is one of the most popular destinations in the Tannheimer Valley, offering a tour around the lake, which takes about 1.5 hours and passes by the Berggaicht Waterfall. The local fishing association sells day tickets for fishing and rents rowboats for fishermen, and the Vilsalpe Refuge on the shores of the lake invites visitors to try its Tyrolean specialities. The lake is also part of a scenic hiking route, the Three-lake route, which has been awarded the Tyrolean Hiking Trail Seal of Quality and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lakes

Allgäu: The most beautiful hikes with small children
This family's experience:

Activities: We went to the Vilsalpsee. We parked in Tannheim and took a Bimmelbahn (small train) or walked along a shaded forest path to the lake. We walked around the lake on a wide path without major inclines

Highlights: The kids loved splashing in the pebbles at the lake. The mountain backdrop was impressive ✨
