Hofburg

Palace Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria

What to expect

The Hofburg is a former Habsburg palace and one of the most significant cultural buildings in Austria. It was built on a site once occupied by the fortifications and towers of the medieval city. The palace was expanded several times during the next 250 years and underwent Baroque structural changes under Empress Maria Theresa. Today, the Hofburg contains five themed museum areas, including Maria Theresa's Rooms, Empress Elisabeth's Apartment, a Furniture Museum, an Ancestral Gallery, and a Painting Gallery. These themed museum areas illustrate various aspects of the political and cultural history of the former imperial palace. The palace also features a Giants' Hall with ceiling frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch and an Imperial Chapel built in the room where Maria Theresa's husband Emperor Francis I had died

Innsbruck with children: Experience report and excursion tips
This family's experience:

Activities: We went to the Hofburg, the former residence of Empress Maria Theresa. We walked through the courtyards. I wasn't that impressed as the building didn't really 'wow' us

Highlights: It wasn't a major hit with us, but the history is definitely there. To be seriously impressed, you probably have to visit the palace from the inside ✨
