Hemmaberg

Place of interest Globasnitz, Carinthia, Austria

What to expect

The Hemmaberg is a 842 m high mountain in the Karawanken range, located west of the town of Globasnitz in southern Carinthia, Austria. The mountain has a long history of settlement, with the first traces of human presence dating back to between 1500 and 1250 BC. In Roman times, a Celtic sanctuary was established on the mountain, and later, in the 5th and 6th centuries, a fortified settlement with several churches was built. Today, visitors can explore the remains of these ancient structures, including the Rosaliengrotte, a cave with a spring, and the Archäologisches Pilgermuseum Globasnitz, which exhibits finds from the archaeological excavations. The mountain is also home to a variety of flora and fauna, including Fichtenwald, Laubholzeinsprengungen, and Wiesen

Warm lakes and wild Karawanks

Warm lakes and wild Karawanks
This family's experience:

Activities: We visited the Hemmaberg with the Rosaliengrotte. We saw the statue of the holy Rosalia in a small chapel in the grotto. We visited the source, which is said to have healing powers. We saw the excavation site and the church

Highlights: The place was magical, even though it was a little 'creepy' for one of the kids. The view of the valley with its lakes and the Karawanken mountains was breathtaking ✨
