The lake is approximately 14 km long and 2.3 km wide, and its surface is usually dry during the summer months. The lake is also home to a number of commercial activities, including the production of β-carotene and brine shrimp. The area surrounding the lake is also rich in history, with the nearby Lynton Convict Hiring Station's stone buildings and the Murchison House Station offering a glimpse into the region's past
