Heirisson Island is a beautiful oasis of calm in Perth, full of kangaroos. The island is an important part of the City's Nyoongar heritage and is nestled between the suburbs of East Perth and Victoria Park on the Swan River. The Nyoongar name for the area is Matagarup, meaning 'leg deep'. The island has a 2-kilometre walking path, barbecues, picnic shelters, a children's playground, a kangaroo sanctuary, and toilets. It is home to six female western grey kangaroos and is a popular spot for tourists to experience WA's native flora and fauna. The island also features a statue of Aboriginal warrior Yagan, erected in 1984 to recognize his strong leadership and resistance fighting during the early years of the Swan River Colony
