Red Hill Gully Diggings

Red Hill Gully Diggings is a historic site located in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The site is part of the Sovereign Hill open-air museum, which depicts Ballarat's first ten years after the discovery of gold in 1851. The Red Hill Gully Diggings are a recreation of the gold diggings that made the city, featuring a winding creek where visitors can pan for real gold. The site also includes historically recreated buildings, costumed staff and volunteers, and traditional trades such as coachbuilding, wheelwright, tinsmith, blacksmith, and farrier. The area is surrounded by tents and buildings contemporary to the early years of the gold rush. The Wadawurrung People, the traditional owners of the land, played a significant role in the discovery of gold in the area and were involved in the gold rush. They helped Europeans find gold and even profited from its sale, but eventually became frustrated as the gold rush continued and the Europeans took over their land without giving anything back
