What to expect

Trial Bay Gaol is a heritage-listed former public works prison and internment camp located in Arakoon National Park, near South West Rocks. The gaol was opened in 1886 after 13 years of construction and was used to house prisoners who were building a breakwater to make Trial Bay a safe harbour. During World War I, the gaol became an internment camp for people of German descent. Today, the gaol is a historic ruin that offers guided tours, including a twilight tour and a kids' tour, allowing visitors to explore the gaol and learn about its history. The gaol also has a museum and memorial, and visitors can enjoy the surrounding coastal views and nearby walking tracks
