The Great Cobar Open Cut is a massive hole created over 100 years ago by men using picks, shovels, and horse-drawn carts. The open cut was used to remove rock for backfill in the underground mine stopes. The main hole is 150 meters deep, but at its deepest point, it extends down to a depth similar to that of the Great Cobar Mine. The site can be safely viewed from behind a fence, but there is no public access to the open cut. The area is of historical significance, with the Great Cobar Mine operating from 1871 to 1919 and producing copper, gold, and silver
