What to expect

Trial Bay Gaol is a heritage-listed former public works prison and internment camp located in Arakoon National Park. The gaol was opened in 1886 after 13 years of construction and was used to house prisoners who were building a breakwater to make Trial Bay a safe harbour. During World War I, the gaol became an internment camp for people of German descent. Today, the gaol is a historic ruin that offers guided tours, including a twilight tour and a kids' tour, and has a museum and memorial. The gaol is surrounded by beautiful coastal views and is near several walking tracks, including the Powder Magazine walking track and Monument Hill walking track
