Port Lockroy

Museum Antarctica

What to expect

Port Lockroy is a historic site located on Goudier Island in Antarctica, known for its significant contribution to Antarctic history and scientific research. The site was established in 1944 as part of Operation Tabarin, a secret mission by the British Government to assert territorial claims in Antarctica. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a living museum, operated by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. Visitors can explore the historic buildings, including Bransfield House, which houses a museum, post office, and shop. The site is also home to a large colony of penguins, and the team at Port Lockroy conducts wildlife monitoring and data collection. The UK's most southerly public Post Office, affectionately known as the Penguin Post Office, is also located here, and around 70,000 cards are posted each year to over 100 countries

This family's experience:

Activities: We visited Port Lockroy, a tiny station set up by the British in World War II and later used for research, which is now a small museum and post office from which guests can mail Antarctica-postmarked postcards

Highlights: We enjoyed mailing postcards from the post office and learning about the history of the station ✨
