What to expect

Gjirokastër is a city in southern Albania, known for its well-preserved old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is situated in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level. Its old town is characterized by picturesque, latticed houses and several tower houses known as kule, which represent the typical architecture of the 17th century. The city is overlooked by Gjirokastër Fortress, where the Gjirokastër National Folk Festival is held every five years. Visitors can explore the city's historic centre, which features a 13th-century citadel, a mosque, and two churches from the 18th century. Gjirokastër is also the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha and author Ismail Kadare
